Nine including a 'Datuk' remanded over automotive institute corruption probe

PUTRAJAYA: Nine individuals, including a 'Datuk', have been remanded to assist in a corruption case related to a RM85 million project involving an automotive institute.

MACC special operations division senior director Datuk Tan Kang Sai confirmed the arrests when contacted today.

All nine suspects, he said, were detained under Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009.

The suspects, including a woman, were detained yesterday at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

Four of them were company owners, while the other four suspects comprised a medical consultant, an accountant, a company director and chief executive, as well as chief operational officer of a company.

Earlier today in Putrajaya, magistrate Tuan Shah Wira Abdul Halim granted a remand order of between three and six-days against all nine suspects, aged between 34 and 58.

According to sources, two male suspects who were remanded for six days, were believed to have asked and received RM14.9 million in bribes from three other suspects to secure a grant for their company via three other companies between 2018 and 2020.
