Government agency officer nabbed for alleged bribery

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a civil servant from a government agency, for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes of about RM100,000.

Sources revealed that the officer, who is in his late 30s, was believed to have asked for a "reward" in return for awarding projects to several companies for sanitisation works at polling centres during the recent Johor state election.

"The suspect had also allegedly solicited more than RM130,000 from an individual earlier this year for sanitisation works, but the individual could only give him about RM100,000."

The source said that the suspect had agreed to reduce the amount of the "reward" and then asked to meet with the individual last Friday to receive the agreed amount.

MACC Intelligence Division director Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman when contacted confirmed the arrest of the man to aid in investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

Azmi said the man was remanded for four days, ending today.

Putrajaya Magistrate Court judge Shah Wira Abdul Halim allowed the remand release application by setting an MACC bail of RM10,000 without deposit with one surety today.
