Preschool teacher arrested for alleged abuse.

JOHOR BARU: A preschool teacher was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly abusing a girl at the preschool.

Johor Baru North police chief Assistant Commissioner Rupiah Abd Wahid said the 24-year-old suspect was arrested in Skudai at 9pm.

"We received a report at 3.17pm on May 10, regarding the alleged abuse of a preschooler by a teacher of a preschool in Tampoi caught on CCTV, which had gone viral on social media.

"In our investigation, the CCTV recording showed that the suspect had pulled the victim's right ear and smothered her face with a pillow. The abuse was alleged to have happened on May 9.

"The victim was taken to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital and a medical officer there confirmed that she had bruised right ear," Rupiah said in a statement.

She said the victim was a 4-year-old hyperactive child with a speech delay.

"The girl's parents sent her to the preschool, which accommodates both normal and children with special needs," said Rupiah.

She said the suspect had been remanded for seven days until May 17.

"The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (for abuse, neglect, abandonment or exposure of a child in a manner likely to cause physical or emotional injury or cause or permit the child to be so abused, neglected, abandoned or exposed)."
