Bentong trader in hot soup after lodging false robbery report

BENTONG; A trader has landed herself in trouble after she lodged a false police report yesterday claiming she had been robbed of RM380 to escape paying back the money she borrowed from a friend.

The matter came to light after the 28-year-old woman turned up at the district police headquarters here to withdraw the report yesterday less than 12 hours after she had lodged the report claiming she had been robbed by a teenager.

District police chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said the local woman turned up about 8am yesterday to lodge a report claiming she was robbed in front of a stall along the road towards Desa Damai near here.

"The woman claimed that she was driving home after sending her children to school when a man stopped her car. She claimed the man took RM380 from her before escaping but policemen suspected something amiss as she could not provide any proof of the alleged incident.

"She returned about 7pm yesterday saying she wanted to withdraw the report. When questioned further, she admitted that she made up the story as she had misused the cash she borrowed from a friend," he said in a statement today.

Zaiham said the woman can now face charges under Section 182 of the Penal Code for lodging a false police report, which carries maximum six months' jail or maximum RM2,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

He issued a stern warning to the public saying lodging a fake report was a serious matter and police will take action against those responsible for such acts.
