Police arrest man for vandalising church in Keningau

KENINGAU: Police have arrested a local man following a vandalism incident at St Francis Xavier's Cathedral here.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Nor Rafidah Kasim said they received a police report about the incident about 10am.

The report stated that an intruder entered the church and damaged two religious statues and a crucifix around 7am.

"Initial investigations found that the church is in a fenced area but the door and fence were not locked. The closed-circuit television camera was also non-functioning.

"Further probes led to the arrest of a local, 34, who is suspected to be suffering from mental illness," she said in a statement.

Nor Rafidah added that the man's urine test was negative for drugs and he was taken to the police station for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 295 of Penal Code for damaging or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class of person.
