Police receive 121 reports related to stranded haj pilgrims

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received 121 reports involving RM5.17 million in losses from prospective haj pilgrims who had been left stranded at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on July 8.

Federal police secretary Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said the reports were lodged by those affected and their immediate family members up to today.

She said these reports were lodged in various states, but most of them were from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Pahang.

"Kuala Lumpur has the highest number of reports at 48 involving RM2.07 million in losses, followed by Selangor at 30 cases with losses of RM956,000 and Pahang at 18 cases with losses of RM1.24 million," she said.

She said police had opened 22 investigation papers related to the reports they received from the stranded pilgrims.

Earlier, it was reported that five people, including a tour company director and agents, had been arrested to facilitate investigations into the haj pilgrim scam.

Police had identified Al-Amin Umrahaj Management and Services Sdn Bhd, UC Travel Sdn Bhd and Destinasi UC Resources as the companies responsible for issuing the furada visas to the 323 stranded pilgrims.

The furada visa is a private visa reportedly issued by Saudi Arabia without involving the quota allocated to Lembaga Tabung Haji.

The case is still under police investigation.
