Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun heads panel of five hearing Najib's final bid to clear his name

PUTRAJAYA: Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat will head the panel of five judges hearing Datuk Seri Najib Razak's final bid to clear his name over the SRC International case where he was sentenced to 12 years jail and fined RM210 million.

The other judges on the panel are Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and Federal Court Judges Datuk Nalini Pathmanathan, Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan and Datuk Muhamad Zabidin Mohd Diah.

The hearing, which starts this morning, will begin with Najib's lawyers putting in their arguments to back their application for additional evidence to be adduced in their client's defence.

Najib, 69, is being represented by lead counsel Hisyam Teh with the assistance of Liew Teck Huat and Rueben Mathiavaranam while the prosecution is led by Datuk V Sithambaram, assisted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul, Donald Joseph Franklin and Sulaiman Kho Kheng Fuei.

The hearing is expected to begin shortly and Najib has already arrived at the court house.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court had on July 28, 2020 pronounced Najib guilty of three counts of criminal breach of trust, and three counts of money laundering and abusing his position as both prime minister and finance minister.

He was sentenced to 12 years' jail and fined RM210 million. If he doesn't pay the fine, he is liable to get another five years in prison.

Trial judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali — who has since been elevated to the Court of Appeal, had then ordered Najib to serve all the prison sentences concurrently.

On December 8 last year, a three-judge panel in the Court of Appeal unanimously ruled to uphold the High Court's conviction and sentence.
