GE15: Kedah police receives report on burned campaign poster

ALOR STAR: The police have received a report of an attempt to burn campaign posters of prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Barisan Nasional (BN) Kuala Kedah candidate Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim, yesterday.

Kota Setar police chief assistant commissioner Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir said police received a report made by BN officials at 3pm, after noticing that the poster in Kampung Gelong Air, Mukim Gunung, had been damaged.

He said the complainant, who suspected an element of treachery against the BN campaign poster for the 15th general election (GE15), made a police report immediately.

"Following that, the police conducted an investigation under Section 4A(1) of the Election Offenses Act 1954, Section 435 of the Penal Code for arson.

"An investigation is under way to identify those involved in burning the posters," he said when contacted today.

Meanwhile, Kuala Kedah Umno division vice-chairman Datuk Abdul Muthalib Harun said his party is upset over what had happened.

Without accusing anyone, Abdul Muthalib, who is also representing Dr Mashitah, hoped that such action will not happen again.

"All party supporters need to campaign prudently and avoid provocation that can create tension when campaigning.

"There are three days left until voting day this Saturday, so all parties should refrain from being too aggressive," he said.
