Brickfields police investigate foreign workers encroaching on former school building

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are carrying out investigations regarding a group of foreign workers and some locals who have encroached into an abandoned former school building in Taman Desa and using it as their home.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Amihizam Abdul Shukor said investigations are being carried out following a police report lodged by the Bangsar/Pudu District Education deputy officer today.

"The 43-year-old complainant came forward and lodged a police report at around 10.34am after reading a news article on the matter that was published by a local newspaper.

"The news article included a few pictures showing a few individuals, believed to be foreign workers, living on site at the former school building which was formerly known as Sekolah Kebangsaan Danau Perdana in Taman Desa.

"The former school building has been left empty and vacant since 2005 because of soil erosion," he said in a statement.

Following the recent development, police went to the location and ascertained that part of the fencing surrounding the back portion of the former school building had collapsed or been removed.

Earlier, it was reported that there were more than 50 foreign workers who worked at a nearby construction site living in the dilapidated former school building due to the inability of the employer to provide accommodation for the workers.

Amihizam said the investigating officer for the case has already contacted the construction company and advised the representative from the company to stop their workers from continuing to live in the former school building.

"Police will carry out patrols, checks and inspections from time to time to ensure that there is no repeat of the matter," said Amihizam, who also advised members of the public including foreign nationals to abide by the law.

He said that members of the public can relay information regarding this matter to the Brickfields Police Hotline at 03-2297 9222, the Kuala Lumpur Police Hotline at 03-2115 9999 or at any nearby police station.
