Cook dies after package on car explodes

KUALA LUMPUR: A cook has died after a package left on his car exploded in front of a restaurant in Pandan Indah, Ampang Jaya here last night.

In the 8.50pm incident, the 28-year-old victim had wanted to move a package that was placed on his Toyota Corolla Altis after being told by a colleague about it.

Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the package was believed to have exploded when the victim touched it.

"The explosion left the victim with serious injuries all over his body and hands.

"The victim was then rushed to Ampang Hospital by members of the public. However, he was pronounced dead at 9.45pm while receiving treatment," he said when contacted.

Farouk said the blast caused the front portion of the car to catch fire.

He added that a team of firemen from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Services Department rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire.

"We found some objects believed to be part of the explosive that was used near the scene and we are still investigating it," he said.

From 9.30pm to 1.30am, Ampang Jaya police were busy carrying out investigations into the explosion at the scene of the incident.

On location were the police's Forensics Unit, the Bomb Disposal Unit and the K-9 Dog Unit. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
