'I wasn't aware and I heard voices in my head,' says man who stabbed patient at Selayang Hospital

KUALA LUMPUR: A 22-year-old man who stabbed a patient at Selayang Hospital, here, recently, told Selayang Sessions Court that he was not aware of his action at the time.

Mohd Khairul Kamul said he heard voices in his head and he was hallucinating when he stabbed the victim.

He said this after he was charged for intentionally causing hurt by stabbing V. Sathish Rao with a knife at the hospital's yellow zone on Feb 14 around 3.45pm.

The accused said that he was hallucinating that day (Feb 14) and had been hearing voices in his head.

He, however, did not record any plea and only uttered "understand" after his charges were read out to him before Sessions Court judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin.

His charges were framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code which carries maximum 20 years imprisonment, and fine or strokes of rotan, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nur Iman Wan Ahmad Afzal made an application under Section 324 of the Criminal Procedure Code, to have the accused sent to a mental institution for an evaluation as he is believed to be mentally unstable.

She also said that the accused was arrested and received treatments at the hospital's psychiatric department since Feb 15.

Wan Nur Iman did not suggest any bail amount for the accused.

The accused, who appeared in court wearing a green hospital garment, was unrepresented. He, however, appealed to be treated at his sister's house in Batu Caves, here.

The judge allowed the application and ordered Mohd Khairul to undergo a psychiatric examination at Hospital Bahagia Tanjung Rambutan in Ulu Kinta, Perak.

She also fixed March 29 for re-mention.

It was previously reported that a man who was down with dengue fever had gone to the Selayang hospital for treatment, on Feb 14, before he was stabbed by a mental patient.

The stabbing injured both the victim's left and right abdomen and the back of his body. However, his condition is reported to be stable.
