KOTA KINABALU: A 33-year-old man beat his mother and younger brother with a wooden stick after the woman refused to give him RM5 to buy drugs.

The 2.50pm incident at the Telipok Settlement Scheme here, yesterday, led to the 48-year-old mother suffering head injuries, while the man's 17-year-old brother sustained an injury to his left elbow.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who was under the influence of drugs, asked his mother for RM5, believed to be for purchasing syabu. However, the woman only gave him RM3, which triggered his his violent outburst.

"The suspect took a wooden stick from the roof of the house and struck the victim (his mother) on the head, causing injury and bleeding. The suspect's younger brother, who witnessed the situation, tried to intervene but was also beaten and injured on his left elbow."

Zaidi added that the suspect fled the scene and discarded the stick behind his house.

"However, he was later apprehended by villagers and brought to the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters before being detained by Criminal Investigation Division officers.

"Investigations revealed that the suspect is a drug addict and has a history of violent outbursts and assault against his mother, although no report has ever been made.

"He is unemployed and frequently abuses syabu. He also has four criminal records related to drug offences."

A urine test confirmed that the suspect was positive for Methamphetamine and Amphetamine.

"He is currently remanded for investigation under Section 326A of the Penal Code," said Zaidi.
