Malaysian lawyers to file class action lawsuit against The 1975

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of lawyers are teaming up to represent the Good Vibes Festival (GVF) 2023 vendors and local artists to file a class action lawsuit against British band The 1975.

In a draft of the suit, lawyer Mathew Thomas Philip posted on his Facebook page naming all four of the British band members as defendants seeking general damages, costs and other reliefs deemed fair by the court.

The other lawyers mentioned by Philip were Ahmad Iyas Husni, Phoebe Loi, and Nandakumar S. Haridas.

He requested parties with relevant information which could be useful for their case to channel it to the pro bono team.

"It was a foreseeable outcome of The 1975's reckless behavior.

"Dear The 1975 band, you should have stuck to your scope of work under your contract.

"It is not your stage to tell us how to run our country. We have a democratic process. You are very silly," he said in the post uploaded yesterday.

The performance by The 1975 at GVF was cut short after its lead singer Matty Healy reportedly criticised Malaysia's anti-LGBT (lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender) laws before proceeding to kiss his male band mate on stage.

Following the incident, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil ordered an immediate cancellation of the festival, which was supposed to take place until today.

Fahmi said the unity government's stance was clear and there would be no compromise with any party that challenges, belittles, or violates Malaysian laws.

Police have received three reports so far on the disrespectful behaviour by the band.
