Man gets six months' jail for hurting wife

IPOH: An unemployed man was sentenced to six months in prison by the magistrate's court here today for voluntarily causing hurt to his wife earlier this week.

Magistrate Siti Nora Sharif meted out the sentence on R. Kumaran, 32, after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The accused admitted to committing the crime against his wife, R. Santhini, also 32, at No 17, Hala Kledang Emas 11A, Taman Kledang Emas here at 6.45pm on Wednesday.

The offence, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.

The facts of the case stated that the man had asked his wife for some money but the latter refused to give it to him. This prompted the Kumaran to slap his wife on the left cheek.

The wife then went to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment and the doctor confirmed that she had a soft tissue injury to the left cheek.

At the same proceedings, the accused also pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to provide his identification card.

According to the charge sheet, Kumaran failed to comply with Regulation 7 of the National Registration Regulations 1990 when he failed to provide his identification card when asked by a policeman yesterday at 1.20pm, at the same address.

The offence falls under Regulation 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 which carries a jail term not exceeding three years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both if convicted.

For this offence, the accused was also sentenced to six months in prison.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Nabilah Norzam prosecuted, while lawyer M. Kantan from the National Legal Aid Foundation represented the accused.

The court ordered the prison sentences to be served concurrently starting from the date of the arrest which was yesterday.
