End of road for couple dabbling in meth trafficking

KUBANG PASU: A young couple working as helpers at a restaurant were living life in the fast lane, driving a new Honda Civic.

However, the source of their wealth was finally uncovered when police seized 8.5kg of methamphetamine worth nearly RM300,000 from the couple during a raid on Wednesday.

State Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Taufik Maidin said acting on a public tip off, police have detained the husband aged 28, outside a house in Changlun about 11.15pm.

"Upon inspecting the man's bag, the raiding team found eight transparent plastic packets containing 8,505 grammes of suspected methamphetamine valued at RM297,500.

"Following the arrest, the team arrested the man's wife, aged 20, in a car parked in front of an eatery in Changlun," he said in a press conference at the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters today.

Mohd Taufik said checks showed that the man, from Bukit Kayu Hitam, has three previous records while his wife, from Pendang has no previous conviction.

"Both were tested positive for methamphetamine and the seized drugs could cater to some 18,000 drug addicts.

"We have also confiscated a Honda Civic valued at RM150,000 and jewelry valued at RM2,214 from the suspects," he added.

Mohd Taufik said initial investigations suggested that the couple, both working as helpers at an eatery, have been active in drugs trafficking for the past one year.

Police have obtained a remand order against the couple until this Wednesday for further investigations.
