Azam: MyAirlines probe solely under police

KUALA LUMPUR: The probe into MyAirlines is solely under police for now and has yet to involve the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said this was because the case was not under the purview of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.

"So far, we have not been involved in the (investigation of the) case. It is solely the police.

"The investigation of the case is not under the purview of the anti-corruption act," he said when speaking to reporters at the 2023 International Anti-Bribery Anti-Corruption Summit.

Police had previously said that MyAirline's co-founder and majority shareholder, Goh Hwan Hua, had been arrested on Oct 17 along with his wife and son.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of Bukit Aman, Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf had said that police obtained permission to detain all three individuals for four days starting on Oct 18.

On Oct 12, MyAirline had announced the immediate suspension of its operations due to "significant financial challenges".

It was reported that the budget airline company stated it was "exploring all potential partnership avenues and capital generation" to save its business.

On another issue, Azam said two companies were charged under Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009 involving posing corporate liability towards companies in the event of their employees or officials engaging in acts of bribery.

They are subject to a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the bribe or RM1 million, whichever is higher, or imprisonment for up to 20 years or both.
