SIBU: A septuagenarian from Kanowit lost RM120,000 after falling prey to a lottery scam here early this month, said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.
He said the man who is in his late 70s lodged a police report yesterday (November 7) claiming that he was approached by a man and two women, whom he did not know, at a car park near a hotel in Kanowit.
"The male suspect told the elderly man that he had won the lottery (worth RM300,000) and one of the female suspects then asked him for his bank account number so that they could bank in his winnings," he said in a statement today (November 8).
Mohd Azman said the elderly man was told that he would first have to give them RM120,000 before his lottery winnings could be credited the next day.
"The victim only realised he had been duped when he checked his account at a financial institution in Sibu several days later and found that the RM300,000 had not been banked in as promised. The victim then lodged a police report," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – BERNAMA
