Police corporal charged with hurting wife

IPOH: A police corporal was charged at the Magistrate's Court here today with voluntarily causing hurt to his wife back in May.

Mohd Zulhazree Razali, stationed at the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division of the Ipoh district police headquarters here, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Magistrate, S. Punitha.

According to the charge sheet, the 39-year-old policeman was accused of hurting his wife, Nur Atirah Suhana Che Razak, 29 by kicking, slapping and hitting her with a basket.

The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Persiaran Hulu Bercham 8, Bandar Baru Putra here at 7am on May 9.

Mohd Zulhazree was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same Act.

Section 323 carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

At the same time, Section 326A states that whoever causes hurt to his spouse or former spouse, a child, a disabled adult, or other family members and commits an offence under Section 323, 324, 325, 326, 334 or 335 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of twice as long as the maximum term for which he would be liable to on conviction for that offence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Vatchira Wong Rui Fern prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Ahmad Syahmi Amran.

Vatchira requested bail to be set at RM5,000 as well as an additional requirement that the accused be prohibited from disturbing the victim.

During mitigation, Ahmad Syahmi requested bail at RM2,000 as the accused needs to support his four children, aged between five and 10.

He also noted that his client had been cooperative since the investigation was launched.

The court set bail at RM2,500 with one surety and also set an additional requirement that the accused is not allowed to disturb the victim until the case is disposed of.

The court fixed Jan 30 for mention.
