Car set ablaze, police not ruling out mistaken identity

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 30-year-old salesman's car parked outside his house in Taman Bukit Indah, here, was set on fire by an unidentified man yesterday.

The victim lodged a police report after he realised that the close circuit television (CCTV) installed in front of his house recorded the unidentified man setting his Honda City ablaze at 2.12am.

In his police report, the victim stated that neither he nor his immediate family had taken loans from Ah Longs.

He lodged the report, fearing for the safety of his family.

Meanwhile, Iskandar Puteri police chief Assistant Commissioner Rahmat Ariffin, who confirmed the report, did not rule out that the incident was the work of Ah Longs, who had mistaken the victim's vehicle, thinking a defaulter owned it.

Police are yet to establish the suspect's identity. The case is investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or any explosive substance intending to cause damage, which is punishable with an imprisonment term not extending 14 years and a fine, or both.

He said police presence in their routine crime patrols will be intensified in the housing estate.

Rahmat also urged residents to alert the police if they witnessed the incident or spotted anyone acting suspiciously in their respective housing estates.

It was learned that there were several similar incidents, including red paint splashed on houses in the estate.

However, some victims had taken loans from the Ah Longs and defaulted on their payments.
