MCA urges Communications Ministry to intensify efforts in eliminating social media accounts recruiting Malaysians as drug mules

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry should redouble efforts to eliminate social media accounts that trap Malaysians into becoming drug mules by offering lucrative wages, says the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).

MCA's head of information Chan Quin Er called on the Communications Ministry to be more proactive in combating activities on social media that are illegal, instead of only taking action after receiving complaints.

She said the ministry should also disclose the statistics of social media accounts that have been detected and blocked for being involved in promotional activities for the syndicates.

"In addition to taking serious action against efforts to block content that violates communication-related regulations, especially related to politics, Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil should also take the issue of drug mules seriously.

"We do not want there to be a wrong perception that shows the government seems to only focus on political issues instead of other more serious issues," she said in a statement.

MCA also advised the public not to be deceived by lucrative job offers on social media sites and urged Malaysians to always double check the offer.

Yesterday, it was reported that Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID)'s director Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said cases of Malaysians arrested abroad for being drug mules have been increasing.

He said they are lured in by offering through social media lucrative wages of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 to smuggle drugs abroad.
