Communications Ministry finalising content of Malaysian Media Council draft bill

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Digital Ministry is currently scrutinising and finalising the content of the Malaysian Media Council draft bill.

Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching said periodic discussions were ongoing with the Malaysian Media Council pro-tem committee, which is made up of media practitioners.

"The discussions are to ensure the prompt presentation of the Malaysian Media Council draft bill.

"Discussion sessions are conducted to ensure that the agreed provisions within the content of the bill are clear and reach consensus among all parties," she said in response to Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang) in Dewan Rakyat today.

Wong asked about the current status of the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council.

Teo said some of the points were being discussed in detail, as it requires agreement on various definitions to be included in the bill.

"The same goes with the enforcement powers to be held by the Malaysian Media Council and other related issues.

"Furthermore, the ministry will engage in collaborative sessions with other ministries, departments, agencies and relevant stakeholders, to obtain a comprehensive perspective, taking into account the benefits of the Malaysian Media Council for the country as a whole and media practitioners in particular."

She added the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council and the proposed bill should consider existing federal and state laws related to media.

"Its roles and functions must also be clearly defined to ensure no overlap with the scope of existing government laws and regulations."
