Woman, who was set on fire by husband, died

KENINGAU: A woman who was set on fire by her husband in an incident in Kampung Tinagalan, Sook, here has died.

During the incident last Saturday, the couple argued during a 'tapai' drinking session at their home.

District police chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said the incident started with a verbal argument between the 50- and 41-year-old couple who were drunk.

He said the situation got out of control when the victim challenged the suspect to set her on fire after being threatened by her husband earlier.

"The suspect reportedly doused his wife with petrol and threw a match at the victim.

"The couple's 16-year-old daughter, realising the incident, immediately took her two younger siblings out to save themselves," he said when contacted today.

Yampil said the teenager then tried to help put out the fire on his mother's body before seeking help from his uncle.

He said the suspect then took the victim to Sook Clinic for initial treatment, whereby later the victim was referred to Keningau Hospital for further treatment.

"However, the victim was confirmed dead by the hospital at 1.41pm last Sunday," he said.

The man has been remanded until this Friday to assist in further investigation into the case.

Yampil said the

investigation found that the suspect did not have any past criminal record and the urine test was also negative.
