Police complete probe into senior cop accused of pushing woman off Penang Bridge

BUTTERWORTH: Police have completed an investigation into the case of an inspector who was accused of pushing a woman off the Penang Bridge last month.

State police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said any decision on any further action would depend on Bukit Aman's suggestions.

"Investigation has been completed and the investigation paper (IP) has been referred to Bukit Aman. It will be decided then, whether or not, there is any criminal element involved. But we also open an IP for disciplinary action," he said today.

It was reported that a confrontation between the police inspector and a woman at Km2.8 of the Penang Bridge last month resulted in both of them "falling" into the sea.

Fortunately, a soldier, who was passing by and saw the incident, jumped into the sea to rescue the duo before helping them onto a fishing boat.

Based on the initial statement from the 40-year-old woman, she claimed that she had been pushed into the sea by the senior police officer, who is based outside the state.

Khaw said besides the suspect and victim, police also recorded the soldier's statement and a few others. The case is probed under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Khaw also said police had obtained a four-day remand order against a couple on a motorcycle, who were caught on video riding dangerously on the Penang Bridge on Monday.

The man in his 50s and the woman in her 30s were detained in George Town yesterday.

Police have opened investigations under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"They claimed to be husband and wife. We are checking if the woman has mental issues and is a holder of the kad orang kurang upaya (OKU) as believed. But whatever it is, a crime is still a crime," he added.

Khaw said police have yet to receive any report from the public against the duo.

"We took actions based on what went viral," he added.

Khaw was met after the launch of the state-level Op Selamat in conjunction with Chinese New Year at the south-bound Sungai Dua toll here.

He said a total of 260 traffic police personnel would be deployed at "hotspots" and "blackspots" around the state during the festivities.
