Penang bridge pushing incident: Statement of inspector recorded

GEORGE TOWN: Police have recorded a statement from an inspector accused of pushing a woman off the Penang Bridge last Monday.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Cheng San said police recorded the 37-year-old's statement at the hospital a few days ago.

Besides the senior police officer, police also recorded statements from another 12 witnesses, said Tan.

"Altogether, we have recorded 13 statements, including from the inspector.

"Investigation is still under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder," he said when contacted today.

Tan said the inspector had not been remanded as he is still under treatment at a private hospital here.

The inspector is previously reported to be treated for a fractured left shoulder and is unable to move.

Based on an initial statement from the 40-year-old woman, she claimed to have been pushed into the sea by the senior police officer, who is based outside the state.

It was reported that a confrontation between the police inspector and a woman at Km2.8 of the Penang Bridge last Monday concluded with both of them falling into the sea.

Fortunately, a soldier, who was passing by and saw the incident, jumped into the sea to rescue the duo before helping them onto a fishing boat.
