Police arrest three men for rioting at fatal accident site

KUANTAN: Police have arrested three men and are looking for two others in connection with the commotion at the site of a fatal accident at Km127 of Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan in Temerloh on Jan 6.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said all the suspects, aged between 37 and 47 years old, were living in the district, and had family ties with the 20-year-old motorcyclist who died in the road accident.

"We have identified five individuals based on the video recordings and three of them were picked yesterday. Police are tracking down two others to assist.

"Investigations revealed, some of the suspects have criminal records including theft, rioting and injuring others. The case (commotion) is solved, and police will provide more updates soon," he told reporters after opening the Pahang-level "Gempur Dadah" crime prevention programme at SMK Bukit Sagu here today.

On Feb 5, a 20-year-old motorcyclist, a scrap metal worker, died after crashing his machine into a Perodua Myvi.

The Myvi driver, 75, had allegedly made an illegal turn (U-turn) when the motorcyclist hit his car.

Minutes later, several individuals, believed to be family members and friends of the motorcyclist, had attacked the Myvi driver; a Proton Saga driver, 42, for recording the incident; and a traffic policeman, 37, who was assisting at the scene. Meanwhile, Yahaya described the heated arguments at the accident spot which happened at the spur of the moment due to a misunderstanding and tense situation.

"The victim's family members vented their dissatisfaction towards a policeman who was on duty on the spot and an innocent civilian. We are recording their statements," he said.

Yahaya said police have recorded the statement from the Myvi driver, a senior citizen, and he was released on police bail yesterday due to the age factor.
