Bangladeshi man nabbed for driving against traffic flow in Kota Tinggi

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bangladeshi national was arrested for allegedly driving a car against a flow of traffic in Kota Tinggi, Johor.

Kota Tinggi district police chief Superintendent Hussin Zamora, in a statement yesterday, said the 43-year-old man was arrested following a clip of the incident, which has gone viral on the social media.

The district Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department, he said, received a viral video yesterday depicting a white Nissan Almera being driven against the flow of traffic and endangering other road users at Km 26.5, Jalan Johor Baru-Mersing.

"The man was arrested by the police at 3.15pm at the Kota Tinggi bus station. He was then taken to the district police headquarters to facilitate investigation into case," he said.

He also said initial urine test conducted on the suspect came back negative for drugs.

"Checks on the vehicle's record also found no prior criminal entries."

Hussin added that the case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving recklessly and endangering other road users, which carries a maximum jail term of five years and a fine of up to RM15,000, upon conviction.

He also advised the public to remain vigilant and abide by the laws and regulations set in place to ensure road safety while traveling.
