Arrests into death threats on lawyer pending full MCMC investigation

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have to wait for the full investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conclude before making any arrests regarding threats against lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid, said city police chief Datuk Seri Allaudeen Abdul Majid.

His statement came after he announced that police have identified the owner of three social media accounts believed to have threatened Nik Elin following her challenging the provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Enactment (I) 2019.

"We are waiting for MCMC's full report so we can hand it over to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action," he said after attending the disposal of case items at the Alam Damai police station, here, today.

Allaudeen urged the public not to turn the issue into a controversy.

"This relates to the jurisdiction of lawmaking between the Parliament and State Legislative Assembly as we have seen in the judgment. So, let's not divert to other issues. Once the investigation is completed, the prosecution will decide," he said.

Earlier, the media reported that Nik Elin had received death threats following her challenge to the provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019.

The Federal Court, in a majority decision of 8-1 on Feb 9, ruled that 16 offences under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (1) Enactment 2019 were null and void.

The historic decision was delivered by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who led the nine-member panel after allowing applications by two Muslim women to challenge constitutional issues to annul 18 offenses under the enactment.
