(Updated) Man killed in a shootout with police in Changlun

KUBANG PASU: Police have seized two pistols and hundreds of live ammunition including for assault rifle after a shootout with an armed suspect in Jalan Bukit Kechik, near Napoh in Changlun, here, this evening.

Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said in the 5.30pm incident, a police team from the state police headquarters spotted the 57-year-old man behaving suspiciously in a Proton Saga.

"The Op Laras task force formed to crack down illegal firearms trade and possession was patrolling this area, which has been identified as one of the main routes for arm smuggling activity when they spotted the man behaving suspiciously behind the wheel of a Proton Saga.

"The team ordered him to stop but the suspect had instead stepped on the accelerator, forcing the team to corner his vehicle.

"The man suddenly fired two shots at the team, forcing them to return fire. In the ensuing shootout, the suspect was killed after sustaining two gunshot wounds, one hitting his left chest," Fisol told reporters at the scene.

He added that upon inspecting the car, the team found a 9mm pistol, a 38mm pistol, 100 rounds of 9mm bullet, 100 rounds of 38mm bullets and assault rifle bullets.

Fisol said background check showed that the man had four previous records related to drugs and a counterfeit firearm offences.

"We will investigate the source of the weapons and ammunitions," he said.

The body was sent to the hospital for a post-morterm.
