3 wardens injured in Taiping prison riot

TAIPING: Three wardens were injured in a riot involving eight prisoners at Taiping Prison here last Thursday (Feb 16).

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Nasir Ismail said police received a report on the incident at 7pm.

He said that initial investigations found that the riot was sparked by dissatisfaction after a prisoner was disciplined for provoking a warden. An argument had broken out between the prisoner and warden before a fight ensued.

"In the 3.30pm incident, the eight prisoners involved were just finishing their quarantine at the Kamunting Correctional Centre before entering Taiping Prison.

"However, one of the prisoners provoked the warden and he was reprimanded. Due to dissatisfaction, the prisoner started arguing and pushing one of the wardens.

"While action was being taken, two fellow prisoners intervened, causing other wardens to enter the fray to break up the fight," he said today.

Nasir said that the prison wardens, aged 27, 41 and 48, suffered minor injuries and were receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital.

"Eight prisoners aged between 24 and 45 were not injured in the incident," he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
