Man booked for letting 13-year-old get behind the wheel

JOHOR BARU: Police have taken action against a man who allowed a teenager to be behind the wheel of a car, as seen in a photo that went viral on social media recently.

South Johor Baru police chief Assistant Superintendent Raub Selamat said the 25-year-old suspect was the son of the babysitter of the 13-year-old boy.

"Investigations found that the incident took place on Feb 18, around 5.30pm at the Taman Daya playground area here.

"During the incident, the suspect had allowed the teenager to drive the car to teach him how to drive.

"The suspect was issued a summons for the offence under Section 39(5) of the Road Transport Act 1987, for allowing a minor to drive a vehicle," he said in a media statement today.

Raub said the case is also being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for elements of neglect and exposing the child to physical injury.

Previously, a photo showing an underage child driving a car went viral on social media. The police received information on the matter around noon yesterday.

In the photo, a man was seen sitting in the passenger seat, while the child was holding the steering wheel and driving the car in question.

Meanwhile, Raub asked the public with any information about criminal incidents to contact the South Johor Bahru police headquarters hotline directly at 07-218 2323.
