20 senior citizens among 97 nabbed for gambling activities

GEORGE TOWN: Police detained 97 people, including 20 senior citizens, through 14 raids statewide. They were suspected of being involved in illegal gambling activities.

Deputy state police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said police launched Op Limau 2024 for 10 days, from Feb 5, to weed out illegal gambling activities.

He said they carried out 14 raids throughout the operations period, involving 10 inside buildings and four in the open.

"A total of 97 individuals, aged between 18 and 75, were nabbed in all the operations. Of the total, 35 individuals had a previous record.

"Police also seized various items used in the gambling activities, including RM40,197 in cash," he said at the state police contingent headquarters here today.

Those arrested will be investigated under Section 6(1) and 7(2) of the Open House Gambling Act 1953.

Meanwhile, Usuf said police also conducted 46 raids during the same period on premises, believed to be operating as unlicensed entertainment centres, offering guest relations services and prostitution.

"A total of 73 individuals, including 26 men and 47 women, of various nationalities, aged between 20 and 60, were detained, with cash amounting to RM3,345 were seized.

They will be investigated under the Entertainment Premises Enactment and the Immigration Act.

Usuf said, as of yesterday, police have conducted 254 raids under Op Dadu, involving 376 arrests.
