Kelantan prisons hold over 7,000 despite 3,000 capacity

KOTA BHARU: Kelantan's prisons are overcrowded, housing over 7,000 inmates despite its designed capacity of only 3,000.

The state's Prisons Department director Mat Yaacob said the two prisons in Kelantan, the Pengkalan Chepa jail as well as the Machang correctional facility, were housing suspects on remand and convicted felons.

"Every day, around 100 to 150 are jailed but there are also people being released daily," he said after the 234th Prisons Day event here.

Meanwhile, Mat said the government's plan to implement the Licensed Release of Prisoners (PBSL), through home detention will have a positive impact.

He said it would ensure better management of prisons and prisoners.

Previously, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry is studying the implementation of the PBSL for prisoners serving less than four years in jail.

The proposal aims to reduce overcrowding in prisons.
