BEAUFORT: A 74-year-old grandmother who had been reported missing was found dead in the forested area of Kampung Binunuk, here, on Friday (March 15).

Kamariah Sungkim's body was found about 1.7km from her home at 2.52pm yesterday, a day after she was reported missing.

Beaufort Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohammad Hasbullah Nenggok said they received a call regarding the missing victim from the police at 10am yesterday.

He said a team of firefighters and members of the Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS) immediately went to the scene to conduct a search and rescue (SAR) operation.

"Based on information, the victim went out to the garden around 9.30am on Thursday and was reported missing when she did not return home until the evening.

"The operation was carried out together with the police, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), and assisted by villagers around the area where the victim was reported missing," he said.

He said the victim was later successfully found by the rescue agencies, but it was confirmed that she had already passed away and subsequently handed over to the police for further action.

"The entire operation was concluded at 3pm."
