Grandmother, grandchild die in Ranau fire

RANAU: A 60 year-old grandmother and her grandaughter were found burnt to death in a fire in Kampung Matan here last night.

The charred remains of Jafflan Sigal, 60, and her grandaughter known only as Carla, four, were found in one of the rooms in the house by a team of firemen as soon as the fire was brought under control.

It is understood that during the fire, both victims and another family member were in the house. The third person in the house escaped the fire.

Ranau Fire and Rescue station chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said they received a distress call regarding the fire at 10.53pm.

He said a team of firemen, fire engine and Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) vehicles were immediately despatched to the scene.

"The fire destroyed a house. A search and inspection was conducted and two victim were found burnt to death in one of the rooms in the house," he said when contacted.

The two bodies were handed over to the police for further action.

"The operation was under control by 11.45pm and efforts to put out the fire continued.

"The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Fire and Rescue Department," said Ridzwan.
