KLIA shooting: Cops beef up monitoring at Malaysia-Thai border to nab suspect

KANGAR: Police have deployed additional personnel to the Malaysia-Thailand border to ensure that the suspect involved in a shooting at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 today does not flee the country.

Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said they have responded to Bukit Aman's directive as part of efforts to track down the suspect.

"This matter is already under our (Perlis police) attention and we have responded in accordance with Bukit Aman's directive regarding the case.

"So far, we have coordinated our field officers for monitoring, especially at the border," he said when contacted today.

He said they have also increased surveillance especially in areas that are often used as 'rat lanes' to escape the country.

"We have yet to detect any suspicious activity but border control and surveillance are still being carried out as a precaution.

"We have also increased surveillance elements, including our intelligence teams at the border, to ensure that the suspect does not escape," he said.

Earlier this morning, a man was left seriously injured after being shot at the KLIA Terminal 1.

The incident occurred at 1.30am at the arrival hall.

Police said the gunman was believed to be aiming at his wife, who is also his business partner.

The gunman had fired two shots, with one of them hitting the woman's bodyguard.

The suspect then fled the scene.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who is believed to have fled north.

The authorities have ruled out any links to terrorist activities or groups, saying the incident was due to a personal dispute.
