4 arrested on suspicion of robbing, choking taxi driver

JASIN: Four people including a woman have been arrested for allegedly robbing a taxi driver and choking him until he passed out.

Jasin district police chief Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Jamil Radzi said the victim, 72, picked the four up from a bus station in Tampin, Negeri Sembilan yesterday afternoon.

They asked to be driven to Jasin.

However, before the taxi could reach the main road, one of the suspects asked the victim to stop the car at an oil palm plantation and proceeded to choke and beat him unconscious.

"When he came to, the victim found himself in a bush at the plantation. He was bleeding and had injuries to his left leg and face including a swollen eye and bruised lips," Ahmad Jamil said in a statement.

The victim then lodged a police report.

The suspects made off with the man's wallet, MyKad, driving license, bank cards, RM300 in cash, mobile phone, house keys, and red Proton Iswara bearing the registration number WMF2866.

Ahmad Jamil said the victim, who has been a taxi driver since 2010, was being treated at the Jasin Hospital.

He said police arrested the suspects, aged 26 to 39, at a hotel in Bukit Baru on the same day.

Three suspects, aged 30, 34, and 39, have multiple criminal records, including for drug-related crimes.

The woman, 26, also has a criminal record.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days until April 24. The case is being probed under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery that causes injury.
