Penang hot water splashing incident stemmed from long-standing misunderstanding [NSTTV]

GEORGE TOWN: A misunderstanding is believed to be the cause that led to a woman splashing hot water on a man with Down Syndrome inside the lift of an apartment in Bayan Lepas last Friday.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal said preliminary investigation showed the misunderstanding between the two started some three to four years back.

"Initial investigation points to the misunderstanding three to four years back as the cause of the hot water splashing incident.

"We believe both the victim and suspect know each other as they reside in the same building," he told reporters at the state police headquarters here today.

It was reported that the 39-year-old woman was arrested last Friday, several hours after the hot water splashing incident.

She has been remanded until Wednesday for investigation under Section 324 of the Penal Code (Hyperlink: https://www.nst.com.my/news/crime-courts/2024/04/1040322/woman-seen-foot...).

Asked if the woman was suffering from mental issues, Kamarul said she did not appear so.

"However, we will send her for further observation," he said.

Kamarul said the police, to date, have recorded statements from at least three people.

It was reported that a man with Down syndrome was splashed with hot water by a woman inside the lift of an apartment in Bayan Lepas here.

The incident caused the 33-year-old man to suffer burns on his body. He is now in a stable condition.

In the 9.20am incident, the victim had complained to his sister that a woman had splashed hot water on him while they were inside the lift.

His sister then lodged a police report.
