Man suspected of driving stolen car nabbed after police chase

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A wanted man believed to be driving a stolen car was detained here after a police chase that ended with him colliding with a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV).

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said in the 10.15am incident last Wednesday, a police MPV on a crime prevention round from the Bukit Mertajam police station received information that a car had been stolen near Megamall Prai here.

Acting on the information, Helmi said the police MPV managed to track down the stolen vehicle to Jalan Kulim in Taman Bandaraya.

He said as the MPV approached the car, the driver (suspect) immediately sped off.

"The police MPV gave chase and ordered the suspect to stop, but he refused. Eventually, police caught up with the suspect in Jalan Sungai Lembu, Machang Bubok, and he was detained. His car was also seized by police.

"In the chase, there was a collision between the police MPV and the suspect's car. As a result, the MPV was slightly damaged in the front.

"The suspect and the car had been taken to the district police headquarters here for further action," he said today.

Helmi said investigations revealed that the suspect, in his late 20s, had seven criminal and five drug records.

"He is also on the police wanted list," he added.
