BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man who was involved in a car chase with the police yesterday was arrested shortly after at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza near here.
The man, in his 40s, had three drug records and tested positive for methamphetamine.
Video footage of police pursuing the man's car went viral this morning. It was uploaded by a Twitter user, @update11111.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said in the 3.30pm incident yesterday, a police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) tried to stop a car driven by a local man who was suspected of hitting a foreigner at the Alma business centre here.
"When the MPV approached the car, the suspect sped off.
"The police gave chase and ordered the vehicle to stop. The suspect refused and even knocked into a motorcyclist at the crossroads in Gading.
"Police eventually nabbed the suspect at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza on the Butterworth Kulim Expressway (BKE)," he said today.
Helmi said police found a modified plastic bottle, believed to be used for taking drugs, inside the car.
He said the suspect, as well as the car, were taken to the district police headquarters.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant in carrying out his duty and Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt.
The case is also investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
