Revised NAP 2014 to be presented next year

PUTRAJAYA: The revised National Automotive Policy 2014 (NAP 2014) will be presented in the first half of next year, said Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Madani Sahari.

He said the revision of the policy, which was being undertaken by MAI, included expanding its current scope of implementation to cover commercial vehicles and other aspects of mobility.

“A study is currently underway and barring any unforeseen circumstances, the International Trade and Industry Minister will launch the new NAP in the first half of 2018,” he told the media after attending a monthly assembly of the Ministry of Trade and Industry here, today.

Madani said since the NAP was introduced in 2014 and until September 2017, the prices of Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs) recorded an average reduction of 13.1 per cent.

“As at November this year, a total of 105 EEV models have been introduced,” he said.

With the NAP implementation, the government provides an incentive to EEV manufacturers in the form of tax deduction, he said, adding that for example, with a tax cut of RM10,000, consumers should be given a price reduction of RM10,000 for a car.

Madani said the government has set the target of increasing the penetration of EEV cars to 60 per cent of total industry volume (TIV) next year from 45 per cent this year.

“In fact, we are confident of achieving the target of increasing the sales of EEV cars to 50 per cent of TIV by year-end, as almost all car manufacturers are producing new EEV models,” he said.

Madani said vehicle prices in Malaysia were expected to remain competitive in tandem with the needs of consumers who were after safety, comfort and environmentally-friendly features in the vehicles. -- Bernama
