Malanjum as CJ will not jeopardise Islam's position: Mujahid

PUTRAJAYA: The appointment of Tan Sri Richard Malanjum as the new Chief Justice of Malaysia will not jeopardise the position of Islam as the country’s official religion said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa Friday.

He said fear-mongering over Malanjun’s appointment on social media was aimed at tarnishing the image of the new Pakatan Harapan government

“He was appointed due to his seniority and he is well qualified.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V has consented to the appointment,” he said, adding that it is the King’s constitutional obligation to take care of affairs involving Islam.

He said that while Malanjum’s name may have been suggested, the King has every right to disagree if the King believes Malanjum’s appointment could be detrimental to Islam and Malay rights.

Mujahid was speaking to reporters at the Nasyrul Quran Complex raya open house here.

“Personally, the existence of a Chief Justice is to execute fairness and Islam stresses on fairness. Thus, I call upon the public to stop raising issues that can be harmful.

“It is not about harming the government, it affects the existing integrity and harmony built on the processes of the law,” he said.

On the Nasyrul Quran Complex, Mujahid said he was impressed by the scale of the Quran printing operation, which is the second largest printing plant after Madinah.

“We must give solid support because the Quran copies that are printed here are unique and based on Malaysian concepts in terms of patterns and motives.

“This shows that Malaysia has the abilities to produce Malaysian version Qurans,” he added.
