Opposition will vote in favour of amended voting age bill

KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition bloc will support the proposed amendment to the Federal Constitution covering the lowering of voting age from 21 to 18, automatic voter registration, and the eligible age of electoral candidates, which will be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the decision by Pakatan Harapan-led government to withdraw the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 tabled earlier, showed that it was willing to hear the views of the opposition.

"As the government has agreed to the proposal, the opposition will definitely back the proposed amendment tomorrow," he said at the Parliament lobby today.

In Dewan Rakyat earlier today, the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 and the National Security Council (Amendment) Bill 2019 scheduled for second reading, were withdrawn.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government had decided to withdraw the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 to provide for automatic voter registration and lower the eligible age of electoral candidates. - Bernama
