Govt considering increasing uniformed presence at borders following shootout with smugglers

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will consider increasing the number of uniformed bodies and further tighten security at borders following the recent incident where a General Operations Force (GOF) member was shot dead at the Malaysia-Thailand border in Perlis.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said additional personnel at the borders would involve all uniformed agencies and the matter would be discussed by the National Task Force soon.

"Some borders, for example in Kelantan, are monitored by police and some by the army. If we look at Op Benteng, it is done through the integration of all uniformed agencies in the country.

"Maybe after this, we will increase the number of uniformed bodies at our borders and tighten security there. We will discuss the matter soon through the National Task Force," he told reporters.

Ismail Sabri also conveyed his condolences to the family members of the GOF Sergeant Baharuddin Ramli.

Baharuddin, who was posthumously promoted, was killed in a firefight when he and partner Sergeant Norihan Tari stumbled on a group of smugglers while on an intelligence gathering mission at the border in Perlis.

Norihan was wounded in the incident and is reported to be in stable condition following surgery yesterday.
