Kedah Umno Youth urge probe of Pas MP over "seditious" state assembly stunt

ALOR STAR: Kedah Umno’s Youth wing has urged police to investigate Datuk Mahfuz Omar under the Sedition Act for storming the state legislative assembly hall with a group of supporters, yesterday.

Its chief, Datuk Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin, said the Pas Pokok Sena Member of Parliament should be probed for allegedly barging into the hall, minutes after the state assembly was adjourned.

“Although the meeting was already adjourned, Mahfuz and his group had no right to storm into the hall without consent from the state assembly's speaker, Datuk Mohd Rozai Shafian.

"The state assembly hall is for assemblymen, executive councillors and government officers to discuss state matters,” Shaiful told reporters after accompanying an Umno Youth member to lodge a report at the Kota Setar police headquarters on the incident, today.

He said although Mahfuz has the right to raise issues relating to his constituency, he should use the proper channels, instead of resorting to unruly behaviour.

Furthermore, he said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah had already assigned his special officer to receive a memorandum from the group led by Mahfuz, on his behalf.

Yesterday, the state legislative assembly was seized by tension when a group of villagers, led by Mahfuz, stormed into the hall, demanding to personally hand over a memorandum to Bashah.

The memorandum is an objection to a plan to relocate some villagers in Bukit Pinang to make way for a sewage treatment pond for a government servants’ housing project.

It was reported that the group arrived at the state assembly building in Wisma Darulaman at about 9am.

In response to the incident, Bashah yesterday questioned Mahfuz's motive in resorting to such a move, when he could have passed the memorandum to Bashah’s officer, or even set an appointment to meet him personally at a later date.
