Pas supporters demonstrate outside Nanyang Siang Pau HQ

PETALING JAYA: About 300 Pas supporters converged outside the headquarters of Chinese-language daily Nanyang Siang Pau here today to protest against the paper’s defamatory cartoon lampooning the party.

The demonstration, organised by the Selangor Pas Youth Council, began at 11am today.

Its chief, Syarhan Humaizi, handed a memorandum to the daily's chief editor at about 11.30am.

"Although Nanyang Siang Pau issued apologies to (Pas president) Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and (Dewan Rakyat speaker) Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia in its print and online editions, Pas is urging them to also send apology letters to (Hadi and Pandikar personally)," Syarhan told reporters.

He said the newspaper’s chief editor had agreed to do so.

Syarhan said the council also warned the daily not to touch on sensitive Muslims issues in the country in future.

"If certain people don't understand the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355), they should come and seek advice from Pas," he added.

The cartoon, published on Saturday, depicts Abdul Hadi and Pandikar as monkeys. It is believed to be related to amendments to RUU 355 tabled by Hadi in Parliament on Thursday.
