Landslide closes down one lane of East-West Highway in Gerik

GERIK: Authorities have closed down one lane of the East-West Highway (KM46), following a landslide which uprooted several trees last night.

Gerik police chief Deputy Superintendent Suhaimi Ishak confirmed the incident when contacted.

"Only one lane has been closed for cleanup works. The landslide was triggered due to heavy rain since 5pm," he said.

Gerik Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said works to clear the debris are still ongoing.

"We were alerted of the incident at 8.52pm. No casualties were recorded during the incident.

"An excavator will also be brought in later to clear the debris. It will take some time before the stretch is reopened to traffic.

"An emergency traffic management plan is being implemented at the site with traffic coming from both direction taking turns to use the unaffected lane," he added.
