Kota Tinggi resort worker charged with possessing IS materials

KOTA TINGGI: A general worker at a resort here pleaded guilty at the magistrate’s court today to a charge of possessing images and videos linked to the Islamic State (IS) terror group in his mobile phone last month.

Mohd Firdaus Saibi, 24, was accused of possessing 29 images and 240 videos linked to IS, or terror-related activities, in a Samsung model SM-J111F/ DS hand phone. He was accused of committing the offence at a resort in Kampung Sedili Kecil here, on March 21, at about 4.20pm.

Firdaus was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, or a fine and forfeiture of assets, upon conviction.

No plea was recorded in front of magistrate Mazana Sinin after the charge was read by a court interpreter.

The accused was unrepresented, while Deputy Public Prosecutor, Suhaila Shafi'uddin, prosecuted.

Suhaila asked for the case to be postponed pending an expert's report, and to obtain permission to transfer the case to the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Mazana set May 21 for re-mention of the case and to allow for the accused to appoint a lawyer.
