Yang di-Pertuan Agong calls on Malaysians to uphold country's sovereignty

KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Muhammad V, the newly-installed Yang di-Pertuan Agong, wants all Malaysians to be united in upholding the country’s sovereignty.

“I hope Malaysians will continue to be united to practice solidarity, tolerance and be responsible for the country's sovereignty because this is our strength and uniqueness,” he said in his royal address at Balairong Seri of the Istana Negara, today.

He thanked all the kings, representatives of kings, queens, head of states and those present for attending the historic moment, saying that he was deeply moved and greatly appreciated their attendance.

The King said he was confident that with the spirit of cooperation and understanding between them – the Conference of Rulers – he will be able to carry out his responsibilities effectively.

He also said there was a profound significance for the year 2017 apart from it being the year of his installation.

Malaysia, he said, will be celebrating its 60th year of independence and he hoped that it will be celebrated in a festive and harmonious atmosphere.

“Moreover, this year’s celebration coincides with (Hari Raya) Aidil Adha which is celebrated by all Muslims.

“This is proof that people of different races, professing different faiths and cultures and practice various ways of life are able to live together in peace and harmony with mutual respect for one another.”
