Master other subjects as well, Ali Rustam tells 'tahfiz' students

MALACCA: In memorising the Quran, 'tahfiz' school students should also master other subjects so that the knowledge gained can be applied in other areas of their lives.

Malay World Islamic World (DMDI) president Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam said he hoped that religious school students will be able to interpret and apply the lessons learnt in the classrooms for use in daily lives instead of just "blindly memorising" the subjects.

He said by taking such an approach, students will have an added advantage not only in terms of memorising the Quran but also other knowledge as well.

"Not only are Tahfiz students being taught to memorise the Quran, they must also learn other subjects such as Arabic, Malay, Geography, and others.

"Students are important in shaping our future and we want produce a better generation to spur the economy as envisaged in the TN50 policy," he said.

Ali said this after handing out certificates of appreciation and cash to 988 students who scored A's in SPM and obtained Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)s of 3.5 and above in STPM at Kota Fesyen MITC here today.

He also lauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who disbursed RM76.5 million to 819 various religious schools throughout the country today.

"This shows that the federal government is supportive of Islamic education especially in a Muslim-populated country like Malaysia." he added.
