DCA told to submit report on KLIA runway closure

PUTRAJAYA: The Civil Aviation Department (DCA) has been instructed to submit a report on Tuesday's incident which saw the closure of a runway at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) after a Malaysia Airlines aircraft tyres deflated while landing.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he has asked DCA to submit the report to him.

"There will be a thorough investigation into the incident on what actually happened that led to the deflated tyres, which rarely happens.

"We will look at all aspects including the weather, the runway and even aircraft maintenance," he told reporters after Malaysia Airlines pledged their support and participation in the Negaraku initiative, which was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Liow, said the DCA director-general had visited the incident site today. The minister also stressed that security and safety has always been the priority for the ministry.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH726 from Jakarta yesterday had two of its tyres deflated after landing safely at KL International Airport at 7.13am. Runway 2 at KLIA was subsequently closed.

MAB in a statement yesterday said some flights utilising the affected Boeing 738 aircraft would be upgraded to the Airbus 330. It is looking into deploying the Airbus 380 aircraft to service the Australian routes.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said that flight operations at KLIA were not affected by the closure of Runway 2 because of the availability of three independent runway systems.
